Golden syrup dumplings

Ingredients
- 150g self-raising flour
- 60g butter, cut into cubes
- 1 egg
- 30ml milk
- 375ml water
- 45g butter
- 300g brown sugar
- 180g golden syrup
- 1 lemon, juiced
Method
- Sift the flour into a bowl and then rub in the butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs
- Beat the egg with the milk and pour into the flour mixture
- Combine to form a dough, then divide and shape into 12 small balls
- To make the syrup mix together the water, butter, sugar, golden syrup and lemon juice in a medium size saucepan and bring to the boil
- Carefully add the dough balls to the syrup and simmer for 15-20 minutes
- Serve warm with syrup, cream or ice cream
- Making and shaping the dough is a fabulous job for the kids after the homework is done
- Any extra syrup can be used to pour over fresh or poached fruit as a quick winter dessert
